Ravi Narayan is a public health consultant and health policy researcher and has been involved with promoting the social and community paradigm in public health education and public health system development for over three decades in various capacities.

He was a faculty member at St John’s Medical College, Bangalore, India, and an overseas faculty of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for over a decade, after which he co-initiated the Society for Community Health Awareness, Research and Action—a health policy resource group working with state and central governments, international health agencies, non-governmental organisations, and civil society in the country and globally.

He has been a resource person and adviser for many organisations including the World Health Organization, the WHO-Regional Office for South East Asia, the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Planning Commission, the Malaria Research Centre at the Indian Council of Medical Research, the Voluntary Health Association of India,the Asian Community Health Action Network, and various Indian and international networks and campaigns.

From 2003 to 2006 he was the coordinator of the global secretariat of the People’s Health Movement—a global movement promoting the “Health for All” goal through strengthening public health and community health policy responses and recently received the AIFO Italy Human Rights Award in Health on behalf of the People’s Health Movement. From 2006, he has continued on the coordination commission of the Global People’s Health Movement. He is also a member of the Foundation Council of the Global Forum for Health Research, Geneva, promoting public health research on health systems and social determinants.

In 2006, he was invited to be a founding governing body member of the Public Health Foundation of India, a new, innovative public-private partnership to strengthen public health capacity and health human resources development in India. He is an international advisory board member of the BMJ and Real Health News.

Recently, he was invited to be a consultant of the National Rural Health Mission of the Government of India and a member of the Medical Education Task Force and the steering committee on primary health care for the eleventh five year plan (2007-12) of the Planning Commission, Government of India.
