Shareholdings: As part of a balanced portfolio: 500 shares in GlaxoSmithKline (approximate value £7,500) purchased in 1997 and my wife holds 600 shares in Smith & Nephew (approximate value £2,750) purchased in 2003. Fees for consulting: Prior to joining BMJPG as part-time chairman in August 2004, I was Communications Sector Leader and Industry Leader for Media & Entertainment EMEA at IBM 2001- July, 2004 and a vice-president, partner and global media industry leader at Arthur D Little 1998-2000. Since 2005 and ongoing, I have been a part-consultant to Accenture UK Ltd. During all these periods I have advised no medical or pharmaceutical clients per se although there were peripheral conversations with one client, Wolters Kluwer, while at IBM. Other directorships: (i) Director of the British Medical Association. (ii) Chairman of the Management Board of the BNF (iii) Senior non executive director at Alphameric, plc (joined the board in 2000) which provides software & management systems to the hospitality and leisure industries. (iv)Trustee of the Breathlessness Research Charitable Trust (since 2000) and Chairman of its Appeals Committee. Editorial: Member (since 1995) of the Editorial Board and peer reviewer for the International Journal of Health Communication (Taylor & Francis, now part of the Informa Group).

For several years and on an occasional ongoing basis, I consult on publishing strategy, interview candidates for senior executive positions and for BMJ’s BNF partner RPS Publishing/Pharmaceutical Press.
Do you have any other interest(s) which should be disclosed?	As my profession is publishing consulting in STM publishing in areas of strategy and international business, there is potential conflict with a number of my clients. When I take on a new client or a new kind of activity with an existing client, I discuss the implications in advance with the BMJ Group Chief Executive and will do so in future also with the BMJ Group Chairman. Recent clients where such potential might exist include New England Journal of Medicine, Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain, Journal of Biological Chemistry and Simba Information (a division ultimately of CSA). Other commitments include being a trustee of LOGOS Foundation which has business relations with Atypon. I have pitched business to Thomson and Wolters Kluwer primarily on international market assessment but have not agreed any projects. In addition to my role as a Director of BMJ Group, I am a past director of a number of companies in Eastern Europe and China and a former colleague of numerous people in the publishing industry. My consulting work with BMJ Group may represent a conflict. Assignments are again discussed with BMJ Group Chief Executive and Chairman and new or substantial projects disclosed to the Board of BMJ Group and declared during any Board discussions.
